The last post I put up was my 50th! Crazy! Perhaps the craziest thing about it is that I've been blogging since June 2010, and I've only done 50 posts! Weird...
Anyway, I guess you are all wondering about how I met my husband. Well, I'll tell you.
We were both students at the same University. Our on-campus apartment buildings were right next to each other. I shared a room with my best friend, Leesh. Next door lived a group of 4 girls. I only remember 3 of their names: Annie (Who Leesh and I actually knew from High School), Sarah (I didn't know her very well), and then there was the truly special Bethy. (More on her later...)
Ty lived with a group of 4 guys. I only remember one of his roommate's names: Chad. Chad was a favorite amongst the girls in the apartment next door. He actually became a good buddy of mine.
Now, I know I mentioned the ever-special Bethy. She seemed like a pretty nice, normal girl. Leesh and I met her through Annie and she became our friend. One night, Bethy came home from one of the free on-campus movies simply gushing about her boyfriend, Ty. He was so amazing and blah, blah, blah...
A week or so later, Bethy came home from...somewhere...absolutely furious.
Being girls, we all rallied around Bethy and asked her what was wrong. She then began to tell a tale of woe and betrayal starring...you guessed it...Ty. She went on and on about how he'd led her on, and then just dropped her flat without warning. Being the protective friends that we were, Leesh and I promptly wrote Ty off as a jerk.
Unfortunately for me and my new-found disdain for Ty, I liked hanging out with Chad. He was really nice, and a lot of fun. During my time "chillin" with Chad, Ty was always in the background. He knew I didn't like him, and he didn't push himself on me. He just happened to live in the same apartment as my friend.
One night, I was walking between my apartment building and Chad's--a group of us were planning to gather together and watch a movie. However, with me being the clod that I am, I rolled my ankle very painfully. I limped inside, with the help of Leesh and Annie, where Chad told me I needed to be looked at by a doctor. Ty was there, and offered to come along, but by then Annie's tiny car was full. (I don't know why 5 of us had to go to the hospital, but apparently the situation called for that many college students to invade the local emergency room.)
Long story short, I got the x-ray and the ankle wasn't broken.
The next day, I got a phone call and was surprised to hear Ty's voice on the other end of the line. "Hey," he said quietly, "I was...just going to the store and was wondering if I could bring you anything?" I was stunned, but told him "No, I'm alright. But thanks." He said "Okay" and hung up.
Later, Ty came over and brought me a pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream. I was confused, but didn't complain. He stayed and talked with me for a few minutes, and then he left.
At the time, I was actually sort of going out with a different guy from the same building that Ty and Chad lived in. He was a bit of a weirdo, and luckily I found that out after about two weeks. The night that guy let me down, I was pretty hurt, but simultaneously relieved. Maybe my pride was somewhat bruised because he was the first guy to break things off with me rather than the other way around. Either way, I was feeling pretty down.
I went over to Ty and Chad's building because there was a group of people that had invited me over to play some games. When I got there the whole thing just looked lame and boring to me. I paused in the hallway, seriously considering going back to my own apartment, when I heard a clicking noise coming from the next room.
I listened for a moment, and realized that someone was playing pool. I stepped around the corner, and there was Ty, playing pool by himself. He looked up and smiled tentatively,
"You're not interested in playing 'Scattergories' either, huh?"
I laughed, "No, not really."
His grin widened and he invited me to play. I accepted. He noticed that I was a little out of sorts, and he asked what was wrong.
I said the typical, "Nothing," but he wasn't buying it.
After a little further probing, he got me to tell him about what "That Guy" had done, and he sympathized, but seemed to sense that I didn't want to discuss it any further than that.
The game continued. I'm not all that great at pool, but I still held my own. After making my second or third shot, Ty said something snarky (Sadly, I forget what). I returned with an equally snarky: "Bite me!" and... HE BIT ME!!! That's right, he picked me up, bit me right on the side of the abdomen and laid me down on the pool table.
I was in shock for a moment, but then I started laughing. I laughed so hard my stomach hurt and my eyes welled up with tears. From that moment on, Ty and I were pretty much inseparable. He became my best friend, and he still is.
As we got to know each other, I finally brought myself to ask him about what Bethy had accused him of. At the very mention of her name, Ty groaned. "Oh, is that what she told you?" I knew I was in for a good story, so I asked him what had really happened.
Apparently, (and this story has been corroborated by the 2 other people that were there that night), Annie and Chad were going on a date together to the on-campus movie night. Neither one of them wanted to go alone, so they each brought a roommate with them.
When Chad and Annie paired off, Ty was stuck with Bethy. They sat next to each other during the movie, had a polite conversation as they walked home, and then...that was it. Nothing else. Bethy took that one uneventful night to mean that she and Ty were predestined for each other and actually started prancing around campus telling people that they were engaged.
That's right, ENGAGED! Then, when Ty told her unequivocally that that was NOT the case, she began her smear campaign against him. (But don't worry, she found another victim to obsess over within a matter of weeks.)
**Side note: When Bethy heard that Ty and I were together, she fulfilled her womanly duty of trying to warn me against him. I listened patiently and then promptly ignored her advice.**
Either way, I'm glad I gave that quiet guy in the corner a chance. Ty makes me laugh every single day. He has encouraged me and strengthened me and helped me to be a better, stronger person.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, thanks for biting me, Ty. :) (But only for that one time. Don't take this as free license to just bite me whenever you want! Be warned!)
That is a nice story. I'd probably be the weird guy in a story like this. Not bad weird though, harmless weird.
ReplyDelete*sigh*
ReplyDeleteThis is so romantic!
Seriously. The stuff of legends. It's like reading a script for a movie...
Lucky girl!
George: Harmless weird can be pretty attractive to some girls. :)
ReplyDeleteChanel: Thanks. It is a pretty good story, isn't it? I consider myself to be pretty darn lucky. :)
He BIT you? Ahhhhhhahahahhahahahahhahaa I love it! How freaking cute is that?
ReplyDeleteONE MORE ONE MORE: It was love at first bite! HAHAHAHAHHAA!
ReplyDeleteWow. I think I just won the lame comment of the day award, my friends.
Nicki: Yep. Right on the side.
ReplyDeleteAnd...I officially award you the lame comment of the day award. You win, hands down! :)
I thought it was punny, Nicki.
ReplyDeleteIt made me lol.
Yes, Candice. You are a lucky ducky.
I think Tyler and I would get along. I was always the weird quiet one too...if you couldn't tell from the randomness you've seen on my blog. I bite too. My wife, like you, is so lucky to have found the perfect weirdo. Ü
ReplyDeleteChanel: Nicki is indeed the winner of the Pun of the Week. :)
ReplyDeleteCharlie: You know, I've always been a fan of weirdness, mainly because I'm pretty weird too, as is my entire family...but that's another story.
Anyway...yes, biting is indeed a favorite of Tyler's. When I complain about it, he always protests: "It was the first thing you ever asked me to do! I have to obey!" I still haven't found a good argument for that one...
@Charlie: Hey! Are you trying to bring the war onto other blogs to see if I'll notice?
ReplyDeleteOh. It is SO ON.
╝Ö→♥ Ü
Sorry, Candice, but he so started it.
Chanel: No worries. I encourage a friendly wars every now and then. :)
ReplyDeleteThe war is all over the internets, Chanel. There is no stopping my two dotted U's...
