The last post I put up was my 50th! Crazy! Perhaps the craziest thing about it is that I've been blogging since June 2010, and I've only done 50 posts! Weird...
Anyway, I guess you are all wondering about how I met my husband. Well, I'll tell you.
We were both students at the same University. Our on-campus apartment buildings were right next to each other. I shared a room with my best friend, Leesh. Next door lived a group of 4 girls. I only remember 3 of their names: Annie (Who Leesh and I actually knew from High School), Sarah (I didn't know her very well), and then there was the truly special Bethy. (More on her later...)
Ty lived with a group of 4 guys. I only remember one of his roommate's names: Chad. Chad was a favorite amongst the girls in the apartment next door. He actually became a good buddy of mine.
Now, I know I mentioned the ever-special Bethy. She seemed like a pretty nice, normal girl. Leesh and I met her through Annie and she became our friend. One night, Bethy came home from one of the free on-campus movies simply gushing about her boyfriend, Ty. He was so amazing and blah, blah, blah...
A week or so later, Bethy came home from...somewhere...absolutely furious.
Being girls, we all rallied around Bethy and asked her what was wrong. She then began to tell a tale of woe and betrayal starring...you guessed it...Ty. She went on and on about how he'd led her on, and then just dropped her flat without warning. Being the protective friends that we were, Leesh and I promptly wrote Ty off as a jerk.
Unfortunately for me and my new-found disdain for Ty, I liked hanging out with Chad. He was really nice, and a lot of fun. During my time "chillin" with Chad, Ty was always in the background. He knew I didn't like him, and he didn't push himself on me. He just happened to live in the same apartment as my friend.
One night, I was walking between my apartment building and Chad's--a group of us were planning to gather together and watch a movie. However, with me being the clod that I am, I rolled my ankle very painfully. I limped inside, with the help of Leesh and Annie, where Chad told me I needed to be looked at by a doctor. Ty was there, and offered to come along, but by then Annie's tiny car was full. (I don't know why 5 of us had to go to the hospital, but apparently the situation called for that many college students to invade the local emergency room.)
Long story short, I got the x-ray and the ankle wasn't broken.
The next day, I got a phone call and was surprised to hear Ty's voice on the other end of the line. "Hey," he said quietly, "I was...just going to the store and was wondering if I could bring you anything?" I was stunned, but told him "No, I'm alright. But thanks." He said "Okay" and hung up.
Later, Ty came over and brought me a pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream. I was confused, but didn't complain. He stayed and talked with me for a few minutes, and then he left.
At the time, I was actually sort of going out with a different guy from the same building that Ty and Chad lived in. He was a bit of a weirdo, and luckily I found that out after about two weeks. The night that guy let me down, I was pretty hurt, but simultaneously relieved. Maybe my pride was somewhat bruised because he was the first guy to break things off with me rather than the other way around. Either way, I was feeling pretty down.
I went over to Ty and Chad's building because there was a group of people that had invited me over to play some games. When I got there the whole thing just looked lame and boring to me. I paused in the hallway, seriously considering going back to my own apartment, when I heard a clicking noise coming from the next room.
I listened for a moment, and realized that someone was playing pool. I stepped around the corner, and there was Ty, playing pool by himself. He looked up and smiled tentatively,
"You're not interested in playing 'Scattergories' either, huh?"
I laughed, "No, not really."
His grin widened and he invited me to play. I accepted. He noticed that I was a little out of sorts, and he asked what was wrong.
I said the typical, "Nothing," but he wasn't buying it.
After a little further probing, he got me to tell him about what "That Guy" had done, and he sympathized, but seemed to sense that I didn't want to discuss it any further than that.
The game continued. I'm not all that great at pool, but I still held my own. After making my second or third shot, Ty said something snarky (Sadly, I forget what). I returned with an equally snarky: "Bite me!" and... HE BIT ME!!! That's right, he picked me up, bit me right on the side of the abdomen and laid me down on the pool table.
I was in shock for a moment, but then I started laughing. I laughed so hard my stomach hurt and my eyes welled up with tears. From that moment on, Ty and I were pretty much inseparable. He became my best friend, and he still is.
As we got to know each other, I finally brought myself to ask him about what Bethy had accused him of. At the very mention of her name, Ty groaned. "Oh, is that what she told you?" I knew I was in for a good story, so I asked him what had really happened.
Apparently, (and this story has been corroborated by the 2 other people that were there that night), Annie and Chad were going on a date together to the on-campus movie night. Neither one of them wanted to go alone, so they each brought a roommate with them.
When Chad and Annie paired off, Ty was stuck with Bethy. They sat next to each other during the movie, had a polite conversation as they walked home, and then...that was it. Nothing else. Bethy took that one uneventful night to mean that she and Ty were predestined for each other and actually started prancing around campus telling people that they were engaged.
That's right, ENGAGED! Then, when Ty told her unequivocally that that was NOT the case, she began her smear campaign against him. (But don't worry, she found another victim to obsess over within a matter of weeks.)
**Side note: When Bethy heard that Ty and I were together, she fulfilled her womanly duty of trying to warn me against him. I listened patiently and then promptly ignored her advice.**
Either way, I'm glad I gave that quiet guy in the corner a chance. Ty makes me laugh every single day. He has encouraged me and strengthened me and helped me to be a better, stronger person.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, thanks for biting me, Ty. :) (But only for that one time. Don't take this as free license to just bite me whenever you want! Be warned!)

A Suggestion...
As he approached her, he took a moment to absorb the way she looked. Her hair was smooth and falling softly into her eyes. He smiled as she tucked a few strands behind her ear. Her legs were swathed in a pair of gray sweatpants and her torso was covered with her favorite sweatshirt. He couldn't help shaking his head at the look of concentration on her face as she studied her textbook. She wasn't dolled up in her nicest clothes or wearing makeup, but it didn't matter. She was still beautiful to him.
"Hey," he began quietly.
"Mmm?" she replied, distractedly.
"What do you think about going out of town for our anniversary this year?"
She looked up and studied his face for a moment, unsure if he was being serious. His face remained clear and open. He was serious. She took a moment to think before answering.
"Well," she began, "that would sure be a lot of fun. Do you think we can do it, you know, with school and everything?"
He smiled, pleased that she seemed open to the idea. "Yeah, we could go during Spring Break."
She nodded, still unsure. "I guess we could look into it."
"Okay," he said. He fell silent, because he knew she was only half listening to him. She was studying for a big test, after all. How little she suspected just what he was planning for them...

Friday Afternoon...
I had just walked in the door when my cell phone rang. It was my mom.
Me: "Hello?"
Mom: "Candice."
Me: "Mother."
Mom: "What do you have going on right now?"
Me: "Nothing. What's up?"
Mom: "I just brought KT (my youngest brother) home. I need to go back to the store to pick up some prescriptions, but he's in no condition to come with me and I don't want to leave him home alone. Could you come and sit with him for a little while?"
Me: "Yeah, sure. No problem."
Mom: "Great. Could you come in about 20 minutes?"
Me: "Yep. I'll just get the kids packed up and be there soon."
Mom: "Thanks."
I hurried and got some things pulled together, including my Abnormal Psychology book so I could study for an upcoming test, and left for Mom's house. When I got there, Mom was just about ready to go. She looked tired, but she smiled when we walked in. "Thanks for doing this, Candice." I smiled back, "No problem. How's he doing?"
I looked around, and then I saw him. He was sitting in the big recliner in the family room. His eyes were puffy and drooping. He could barely move, and his speech was slurred as he greeted me: "Hey Sis." He didn't look at all like his usual self, and I pitied him.
Mom gave me a little look, and then turned to KT: "I'll be back in a few minutes. Just rest, okay?" KT nodded, but I don't think he was all that aware of what was going on.
Mom left, and I sat in the reclining rocking chair across from my little brother as my kids started playing, excited to be at Grandma's house. I talked to KT, unsure if he would even remember our conversation when he woke up the next day.
My son ran up to his Uncle, asking him to make a paper airplane. (Both of my little brothers are really good at making paper airplanes).
KT blinked slowly, but then he slurred: "Sure, Buddy. But you'll have to bring me a piece of paper, because I can't really walk right now without falling over." My son complied, promptly requesting his favorite design, the "Eagle." KT's hands were clumsy and unsteady as he tried folding the paper into an airplane. It came out a little crooked.
After I'd talked to my brother for a little while, he said: "Hey, could you get me some water and a big cup?" I complied, and he promptly proceeded to swish a little bit of water and then spit a mouthful of blood into the large cup I'd brought from the kitchen. I felt a little bad for him, but I also understood.
Getting your wisdom teeth taken out can be a pretty miserable experience.

For Me? Really?

On Valentine's Day, my good friend Chanel gave me an award. That's right, an award! Woot!
The Stylish Blogger Award is indeed a great honor, and makes me feel fabulous because it means that the two hours I spent rearranging the layout for my blog has been appreiciated.
As is the case with most of these awards, there are rules to be followed. Therefore, I shall not disturb the wisdom of our blogging forbears and dance the necessary dance.
Rules:
1) Link back to the person that gave me the award. (Check!)
2) Share seven things about myself.
3) Pass it on to ten new blogs that I'm following.
4) Tell them I gave them an award. (I may "forget" about this one)
Well, since I already linked back to Chanel's Neurotic Fabulosity, I will now tell seven things about myself. Brace yourself.
1) I am the second of six children. I come from a big family and LOVE IT! We are all quite close to each other, and we spend (almost) every Sunday evening at my parents' house. However, even though I loved being a part of a big family, I never actually wanted to be the mother of a whole bunch of children of my own. I have two beautiful kids, a boy and a girl, and they're keeping me plenty busy for the time being.
2) I currently live in the same neighborhood I grew up in. It's a wonderful little place, and after living in a different city for the first four years of my marriage, Tyler and I decided that this was where we wanted our kids to grow up. So here we are.
3) I've always wanted to learn sign language. I have no idea why, it's just something that's been on my list of stuff I REALLY want to learn since as long as I can remember. I plan to take some classes before I graduate with my Bachelor's degree.
4) I love music. I play the piano (I'm incredibly average), I also play the guitar (average), and sing. I was actually a choir geek in high school, and at the time my proudest accomplishments included my being selected for the audition-only, very exclusive show choirs during my Junior and Senior years.
5) I've been to two countries other than the United States: Canada and Mexico. However, I've ALWAYS wanted to visit England. Tyler's greatest wish has always been to visit the land of the Beatles as well, so together we plan to make it happen someday!
6) I'm an average cook overall, but there are a few things that I make VERY well: Lasagna, Brownies, Applesauce Cookies (Holy crap, those things are AWESOME!), from scratch double layer chocolate cake, and of course chocolate chip cookie dough. I'm famous for that one.
7) I am currently taking a Biological Psychology class. It's freaking AMAZING!!! This is definitely a subject I can sink my teeth into and never let go. I even got to hold a real human brain in my (latex gloved) hands! It was an incredibly humbling experience. I mean think about it: Holding in your hands what is left of an actual person's whole life: memories, personality, everything. Very awe-inspiring.
Well, there you have it. Now to pass the love along...
First, I think I'll have to give this award to my good friend Mynx over at Dribble. Not only is she the sweetest Aussie EVER, she was my first follower and has become a good blogging friend. She's a mom with a sexy flair and zest for life. (Not to mention the fact that she has recently changed her blog layout to an unusual but oh so sexy black, white and red motif. Fab!) Love her!
Second, I would like to give this award to Doug at "I Like Cheese". He wins because of his blog's non-stylized style. I think I'll call it: "Simple." Not to mention the fact that he's a funny guy that makes me laugh. That makes him a winner in my book.
Also, I think George at "It's Time That I Said Something About This" deserves the award because of his simple, masculine blog layout. It's tasteful, and I think it should be recognized. Besides, he's an honest person that's not afraid to show his true self.
Next, I believe Nicki at "The Loaded Handbag" deserves recognition. Her black background coupled with her AMAZING photographs gives her blog a nice, "pretentious" as she calls it, atmosphere. Also, she's funny and has a great attitude. Besides, she invented "Swedish Fish Day" and that deserves an award so far as I'm concerned!
I also enjoy going over to visit "Drake's Doomsday Corner". He's funny, and can pretty much tell you anything you want to know (and then some) about movies and video games.
Number six on the list is Marsy at "Giddy Fingers." She's hilarious, and draws AMAZING pictures with her computer. They're fabulous.
I can't give out Stylish Awards without including the awesomeness of Charles at "In Review: Stuff and Things." After a painfully long absence, Charles has recently returned to the blogosphere to honor all of us with his wit and fantastic writing. Welcome back, Charles!
Next, I feel the need to "tag back" to Chanel over at "Fabulously Neurotic." She's funny, and writes honest posts about her life with her boyfriend "Padawan", her dog "Choo Choo" and her ghost who she has dubbed "Kane". She's another fellow blogger that's been hanging around my blog for quite a while and I consider her to be one of my blogging friends as well. Besides, her blog layout changes on a regular basis, and it's fun to see what she'll do next!
I still have two awards to give out, so I'll throw in a shout out to Scott over at "Scott's Tip of the Day" and Alexa at "Loose Leaf Writing". Scott makes me laugh like a maniac. He's hilarious. Just try his blog, you'll see what I mean. Alexa hasn't posted anything for a couple of months, but she's still one of my blogging heroes. She's funny, but she makes you think too.
Alright, time for the rambling to be over now. Thanks again for the award, Miss Chanel.
Later! :)

Lesson of the Day...
In order to fully understand today's events, I'll need to take you back a little bit...
Tyler, also know around here as "The Husband" lost his Blackberry about a week and a half ago. Yeah, I know. We've been frantically searching for it ever since and have been unsuccessful. Trust me, we've ransacked every single place we visited on the day we know he lost it. Nothing. It's as though some angry ghost just up and stole it for kicks. (Chanel, you wouldn't know whether Kane has been to Utah recently, would you?)
Needless to say that after a few days with NO sign of finding his Blackberry, (and getting stranded on the highway without gas and no cell phone) Tyler had to buy a new phone. Unfortunately, the one he wanted wasn't in stock, so he ordered it and has been using a piece of crap "loaner phone" ever since. And now you're all caught up for the rest of this post. Moving on...
This afternoon, I was finishing up giving the kids their lunch and getting ready to put the baby down for a nap when there was a swift, strong knock on the front door. Tyler had been tracking his phone, and knew it would be coming today so I rushed to answer it. Sure enough, there was the guy in the brown UPS uniform, holding a padded envelope and that digital signature device thingy.
When I opened the door, he said a brisk: "Hi. How are you?"
I answered with an automatic: "I'm good. How are you?" as I proceeded to sign for the package.
After replying that he was doing just fine, the UPS guy paused a moment, then asked: "So, are you from this area?" I looked at him, a little confused, wondering if he recognized me from somewhere or something. He saw my confusion and hurried to explain:
"The reason I ask is that when you answered me just now you said: 'I'm good. How are you?' About 90 percent of the people around here will just say 'I'm good' and nothing else. I'm from Texas, and we always reply with another 'How are you?' It's considered rude not to. Now I'm not saying that the people around here are rude, but it's really rare for someone to reply in the way that you did." Then we chatted for a few more moments before he went on his way with a smile, a wave, and "Have a great day."
I was a little surprised by what he told me. I love the area I live in. I grew up here. It's filled with great, friendly people, and it's a place I can feel good about letting my kids play outside. But what kind of crazy habits have we formed around here when we don't even reply to a "How are you?" with "I'm fine. How are you?" Isn't that just an automatic response for everyone?
Either way, I think I made this UPS guy's day. So the lesson of the day is, ask your UPS guy how he's doing every now and then. It only takes a moment, and you just might get a nice, friendly conversation out of it.

True Confessions..
Okay, I have to be honest here. I don't care one iota about football. I didn't even try to watch the Super Bowl yesterday, and I'm not sorry that I missed it.
So far as my football knowledge is concerned...well...let's just call it limited. I know there are two teams, I know what a touchdown is, and I know that they have to cross that orange line to get a down. Other than that, I neither know nor care. Sorry, it's just the truth.
Don't get me wrong here, I actually do like to watch sports, just...you know...OTHER sports. Like hockey. I LOVE hockey. And the Olympics are oh so fabulous. I will even watch basketball and soccer, live and in person. I just don't get what's so great about football.
Tonight, I found a picture that my little brother had found and posted on Facebook. I liked it so much, I decided to find it online and share the link with all of you. I know, you're welcome.
Personally, I think this is THE PERFECT plan for getting out of having to talk about boring crap I don't care about...er...I mean...football. Just follow this link, and enjoy.
Again, you're welcome.

Deja Vu, and Hey! Look what I found!
Over the last few months, I keep getting that eerie feeling: "I've been in this exact spot, doing this exact thing before." I'm not even kidding, it's as though I've previously dreamed my life, and now it's all coming back to me in weird little flashbacks.

I know that Deja Vu is something that everyone experiences at some point in their lives, but it seems like at least once a week I get that "I've been here and seen this before" feeling, whereas throughout most of my life, it was once or twice a year. Aw crap! I'd better not have some weird brain thing going on. I don't want to deal with some arrogant "Dr. House" character who will all but kill me just so he can satisfy his own curiosity...but I digress.
For those (VERY few) of you that have been reading my blog for a long time, you may remember this post, and then this one, and again this one about my little fetish with signs. I like to find signs that are funny in and of themselves, or that people have screwed up via their own incompetence. When I find those signs, I've made a resolution to take a picture of them so I can share their hilarity with those that care enough to enjoy them with me.
Anyway....I've found a few signs that I thought y'all might enjoy.
#1: This is a sign that I saw outside the parking garage for an outdoor mall downtown while Christmas shopping. I laughed my face off. Do they really think people are going to follow those instructions? Who's gonna enforce it? No one, that's who! Do you SEE any returned complimentary umbrellas? NOPE!

#2: This was a little sign I noticed at a frozen custard place, up next to the cash register. It just struck me as funny, so I took a picture of it.

#3: This is actually a tote bag I noticed at the mall a few months ago. It made me smile, and Tyler the Husband didn't quite get it, so I sent the pic to my Bestie, Alicia. She totally got it. :)
